How many tower defense games have you seen me cover on my website? Ten? Twenty? Fifty? I’ll just opt to make it easy on you folks and simply say, “a lot”. It’s a genre that I never get tired of and with good reason…tower defense games are both strategically fun and addicting. “The King’s Armory”, however, breaks the mold and puts the action right on your dining room table. Now I know that games like “Castle Panic” have been doing this for quite a while now, but this is the first game I’ve seen that is both in-depth and keeps with the video game formula. Spawn and exit locations? Check. Towers that attack the monsters as they advance down the path? Check. Heroes that you can control on said paths? Check. While I haven’t had the pleasure of playing it, “The King’s Armory” certainly looks like a lot of fun to play.
Game Designer John Wrotniewski over at Gate Keeper Games had this to say:
“Heroic choices & strategies are needed to save the realm in this cooperative-play tower defense board game for 1-7 players. With a unique scaling system that allows players to drop in or out mid-game without upsetting game balance, The King’s Armory is truly a great addition to any gaming group’s repertoire.
As with online tower defense, the game generates waves of foes intent on reaching the other side of the map. They seek to pillage the King’s Armory and use the insane weapons inside against the kingdom. The realm’s only defense is the team of Heroes and their strategic use of the resources available. Each player chooses a Hero to play; together, Heroes prepare for and respond to each dynamic, unpredictable wave of foes by engaging each Hero’s unique skills-set, Tower-placement, Hireable recruitment, and acquisition of Equipment and Reinforcements.
The game is never the same twice, as the combination of Heroes, Foes, Hireables, available Equipment and Reinforcements, and even the path on the map will change every time. Strategy, therefore, is always a fun challenge.
The King’s Armory is undoubtedly an enjoyable game. Rahdo reviewed it as “really, really, really great” while Undead Viking speaks of game play as “a heck of a lot of fun… When I actually stop and high-five somebody, I can tell I’m into the game and I can tell I’m enjoying the heck out of it. The game’s a winner at that point. …I can’t speak highly enough about it.” Other third-party reviewers, play-testers, and backers attest that The King’s Armory is a good time!
The game has adjustable difficulty level and play-time, and can even be used as a teaching tool for kids. The campaign itself is happy to have EU-friendly shipping, retailer tiers, and even a partnership with Level99 Games (featuring characters from its game: Battle-Con). It’s absolutely worth a view at The King’s Armory Kickstarter.”
