I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I’ve ridden a bike. I know that it was back in my youth, presumably back when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. It was just a matter of time until one promising game developer, graphic designer, and cross-country cyclist by the name of Alex Solomon came up with the idea for a card game based around the subject. In “Geared”, players assume the rules of bike mechanics who are aiming to build as many bikes as they can before race day. Of course, with there being different parts to utilize and action cards thrown in for good measure, players will quite literally (as literal as tabletop gaming can get) be in for the rides of their lives.
Game creator Alex Solomon from Solomon Design had this to say:
“How fast can you build a bike? Support Geared on Kickstarter to find out.
Starting December 13th, Alex Solomon will begin his campaign on Kickstarter to gain funding for his new bike building card game, Geared (www.gearedcardgame.com). In Geared, players are bike mechanics that must put together as many bikes as they can before race day. For each bike that is built, a player earns a certain number of points depending on what level of parts they used to build that bike. Players can also use action cards to steal, swap, or remove parts from other players and get their bikes built a bit faster. Whoever is the first player to earn 1000 points is the winner.
With multiples levels of bikes, the tactical element of Action Cards, and many ways to win, Geared is guaranteed to keep you coming back for more. What’s so great about Geared is that anyone can play. It’s simple to pick up and start playing. Building bikes in the game is easy to do and the action cards really add that competitive edge. You can focus on trying to build bikes on the table, or you can plan your next several moves as you build bikes in your hand. Try not to hold on to the high value parts cards too long though; another player could come out of nowhere with a great build and win the game. Geared really does have something for everybody. Game tester Skyler Taylor had this to say, “[Geared is] well thought out, fun to play, and the graphics are very well done. You can tell a lot of consideration was taken to make the final product.”
After his ride across the United States to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis, Alex Solomon learned how important it is to have the support of others. He loves seeing people come together to achieve a goal and knows that Kickstarter is the perfect way to see that happen. However, turning a dream into a reality is not an easy task. As a graphic designer who has several years of experience, Alex knows the hard work, dedication, and support that are needed to bring Geared to life. The only way that Geared will become a reality is with the help of others who back it on Kickstarter. Backers of Geared can even have their own bike featured in the game!

I was involved in some of the early play-testing of this game as Alex was in development of it, and I really love the attention to detail and game dynamics. It’s a handsome looking, fun game.
