I’m pretty sure they do, they just aren’t prejudiced against different kinds of food.
Canis lupus familiaris, man’s best friend, and rightly so. They not only comfort and protect us, but some are even trained to assist us in our daily living. Regardless of all that they do, I am surprised by how many people shy away from me when I mention that I own a Pitbull, as if I had just threatened to make them watch seventeen hours of Full House reruns.
That’s about right.
When I feel like arguing, I ask these people why they don’t like Pits (Pitbulls, not armpits…que laughtrack). The majority of responses I get centers around the way they are portrayed in the media and how quote unquote violent they can be. When I describe the way my dog behaves to these people, they can’t believe it, as if I had told them that I was secretly a Cylon.
1 of my 3 total readers will probably get the reference.
Most people see Pitbulls as violent animals that are a danger to society. If you are one of those people, let me ask you this…do you judge an entire race of people of being a certain way because you’ve seen them once or twice on the news? Can you say with absolute certainly that the few bad experiences you had with a member of the opposite sex means that they all act the same way?
When we were moving to our new house via hired hands from a company I will not name, one of the movers said that he too owned a Pit and loved the breed of animal. Ten seconds later, he mentioned he fed it raw meat and was “training it”, draw your own conclusions people.
Do all animals have a basic instinct bred into them, much like humans do? Will they protect their territory and their food and sometimes act before thinking? In short, yes, but you can’t blame the animal for your own ignorance. The dog’s behavior is molded by the people around it, whether the dog is bred for fighting or surrounded by a loving family. Of course you don’t see the latter on the news…after all, bad news sells.
Our dog Lucy is one of the best dogs I’ve ever had the fortune of knowing. She deserves every toy we give her. Even she sometimes gets carried away when she plays, but what animal, including humans, doesn’t? She’s very intelligent and has never turned on us in the time she’s been with us or tried to attack anyone.
Extremely Vicious.
Before you blame the dog, blame the owner. People are often afraid of that which they don’t understand. Take the time to educate yourself about dogs in general and be better for it.
