Video Games

The very first point and click adventure game that I ever played was “7th Guest.” It was a creepy, albeit frustrating experience as there was no online service that provided free guides and walk-throughs.  The only magazine subscription I had that provided anything by way of guides or cheats was “Nintendo Power”, which didn’t help all that much.  “ASA: A Space Adventure” is one such kind of game, though it has a science fiction twist to it.  In this case, you’re an astronaut who’s been sent into space to repair a station.  I don’t want to spoil the story, but suffice it to say that things spiral out of control quickly from there.  Like “7th Guest” and “Myst”, you’ll be exploring the environment and trying to solve incredibly difficult puzzles.  Before we get started, I’d like to thank Simon Mesnard for providing me with a free review copy.

Games like “Bejeweled” are fine, but often lack the oomph I need when I’m in the mood for something deeper.  “Puzzle Quest 2” is a game I play off and on, but often doesn’t remain on my play list for extended periods of time due to one major issue: it’s unfair as hell.  Before I touch on that, let’s briefly touch on what I did like about the game.

I’m an avid “Back to the Future” fan, so when someone tells me that I’m just not thinking fourth dimensionally, I usually just run them off the road and into a manure truck.  At any rate, I’ve always enjoyed stories that involve going back in time to ensure the well-being of the future.  Surprisingly, that’s exactly what “Retro/Grade” is all about.  As a space pilot, you’ll be flying backwards in time, making sure that all of your actions are repeated exactly to safeguard the spacetime continuum.  Before we get started with the flux capacitor references, I’d like to thank Matt Gilgenbach, the Co-Founder of 24 Caret Games, for providing me with a free review copy.

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to navigate the dense forests of Endor on a speeder bike (watch your “Return of the Jedi”, kids), then look no further than “Race the Sun”.  In this recent Kickstarter success, players will be guiding a ship around a series of obstacles, trying to get as far as they can before the sun goes down.  Before we get started with the preview, I’d like to thank Forest San Filippo for providing me with a free copy of the game.  It’s important to note that the game is currently in the Alpha stages, meaning that it isn’t done yet.  The below content is thus subject to change.

I come across a lot of games similar to “Minecraft”, but they usually turn out to be unique and different in their own special way.  “Block Story” introduced a lot of mechanics that I felt were missing from “Minecraft”, just to name an example.  “Vox” is an upcoming game with a lot of potential, bringing customization and in-depth RPG elements to the sandbox genre in ways I hadn’t seen before.  Before we take a quick look at this game in further detail, I’d like to thank Steve Ball from AlwaysGeeky for providing me with a free copy.  It’s worth noting that the game is still in the early Alpha stages, meaning that the game isn’t done yet and the content shown below is subject to change.

Both “Slender: The Eight Pages” and “Haunt: The Real Slender Game” scared the crap out of me, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  I came across “Slender’s Woods” on Desura, saw that it was a free download, and decided to jump right in.  The graphics are on par with the former and not as good as the latter, but it’s certainly scary enough to wish you hadn’t turned around.  You can check out the game yourself by downloading it or watching my gameplay video, links below.

I’ve played pool perhaps three times in my life.  The first two times were as a kid, so I had an excuse to fail miserably.  The third time, on the other hand, was a few years ago. I came across Nashville billiard & patio | middle tenn’s game room superstore! and decided I should give it another try.  I rubbed that blue chalk stuff on the end of my cue stick thingy like a pro, looked from left to right slowly like I owned the place, then proceeded to drain the white ball in the corner pocket during the break without hitting another ball.  I nodded sagely, as if I had meant to do that and that I had my opponent right where I wanted him.  Alright, so I wasn’t cut out to be a pool player…that’s what video games are for.  “Virtual Pool 4” is the newest game in the “Virtual Pool” series, promising beautiful graphics and updated, realistic physics.  Before we take a look at this game in further detail, I’d like to thank Steve Chaplin from Celeris, Inc. for providing me with a free review copy.

A new “SimCity” was long overdue.  “SimCity 4” was released back in 2003 and “SimCity Societies”, while a great game, was too casual to satisfy my need to run things like a know-it-all with delusions of grandeur.  I had reservations about getting this game, mainly due to the trouble I’ve had with EA’s Origin system as of late.  My account was locked in some sort of weird loop that was somehow signed up to Origin but wasn’t, though it may have had something to do with the seventy or so IDs that plagued it from games dating back to 2004.  Trying to contact EA was even more difficult, as I just didn’t have “two hours” to wait around to talk to someone on their support chat.  Creating a new Origin press account for my website seemed to do the trick…a fresh start as it were, but I digress.  “SimCity”…let’s take the plunge shall we?

It’s a safe bet that at least one of my regular readers works in some kind of office setting.  I’ve never had the pleasure of being asked to stay late (sarcasm button off), but I do have a pretty good imagination.  “One Late Night” plays on that imagination, putting the player through a quick horror experience that will haunt your dreams for some time.  You’ll be trying to maintain your sanity while trying to find clues in regards to what is going on and what you need to do next.  It’s free and definitely worth a download.

You’re on a train with a countdown clock.  You have about twenty minutes to figure out how to stop the train before the wreck occurs.  Who are you?  Where are you?  What’s up with the train?  Why are weird things happening?  “Process” won’t answer all of these questions, but it WILL make you think.  I found “Process” to be an intriguing, albeit short puzzle / horror game.

I’d like to think I know my way around a plastic cup, but there’s always room to grow.  I’m mainly an iced tea and water drinker by nature, so naturally I felt a little intimidated by this game’s title.  What if my avatar doesn’t like the taste of soda?  What if I overindulge and have to use the bathroom?  Will the condensation from the cup make my hands slippery, resulting in a possibly embarrassing spilled drink episode?  If I wait too long to drink my soda, will the ice slide up the straw and possibly choke me?  These are the questions that a pro soda drinker should be asking themselves.  “Soda Drinker Pro” is a soda drinking simulator that will put your simulated lips and esophagus to the test.  Will YOU have what it takes to be a pro soda drinker?

Sasha Darko, the creator of “Sacred Line”, was kind enough to reach out to me and bring this game to my attention.  “Sacred Line” puts the player in the shoes of Ellen, a private detective, who gets a phone call from an unknown person who directs her to some sort of forest.  Somehow, this develops into ancient sects, third world countries, totalitarian regimes, and pollution.  The game, as a whole, takes about thirty minutes to play through.

“TrackMania² Canyon” is one of many games in the “TrackMania” series, this particular one being the first and allowing players to experience the thrill of racing in a canyon-esque setting.  I’ve had my eye on it for a while, mainly due to the fact that I hadn’t touched a true racing game in a very long time.  Having played and enjoyed “Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage”, I was eager to see how this particular racing game stacked up and what new innovations I’d see in my travels.  I’ll say this much…the trailer boasted jumps and drops that left me slack-jawed.  Before I begin comparing automobile insurance rates online, I’d like to thank Edouard Beauchemin from Nadeo for providing me with a free review copy.
